Carnival Cool Down featuring The Hartford Steel Symphony, Concha Unlimited Dance & Friendz Drums

On a cold February night, could there be another sound that warms you up like that of the steel drum being hammered? For over 25 years, the Hartford Steel Symphony has been delighting audiences all over New England, playing not only Calypso and Soca favorites, but also Pop, Classical, Gospel and Jazz, all while keeping that island rhythm flowing. The Concha Unlimited Dance and Friendz Drums groups join the HSS for what promises to be a fantastic celebration of West Indian music, dance and culture. Whether you’re coming back from Carnival in the Caribbean, or you just want to warm up your winter, come on down to the Hall and get ready to dance the night away!!

Artist Bio

Established in 1989, the Hartford Steel Symphony has been providing musical enjoyment around the New England Area for many years. Our musical genre consists of Soca, Calypso, Reggae, Pop, Classical, Gospel and Jazz; all with an island rhythm.

The band consists of performers that have all competed in several years of steel band competitions and musical extravaganzas. With these countless performances, the band has continually finished at the top of the competition. Besides competitive playing, The band has also performed with other musical tycoons such as The Hartford Symphony Orchestra as well as one of Steels bands greatest panist, Len 'Boogsie' Sharp.

Community entertainment is the heart of the band. They have participated in Hartford First Night, UCONN championship recognition parades and various town musical festivals around the state. On a smaller scale, the band has also provided private entertainment for many satisfied customers during graduation parties, school assemblies, wedding receptions, Luau's, Holiday Parties and many other private events.

On a more personal level, while staying in touch with our historical roots, the band proudly participates in the annual River Front Taste of culture and West Indian Celebrations during the summer months. In addition, the band provides steel drum musical instruction to youths throughout the school year. The band performs under the musical direction of Mr. Kelvin Griffith.
