On a cold February night, could there be another sound that warms you up like that of the steel drum being hammered? For over 25 years, the Hartford Steel Symphony has been delighting audiences all over New England, playing not only Calypso and Soca favorites, but also Pop, Classical, Gospel and Jazz, all while keeping that island rhythm flowing. The Concha Unlimited Dance and Friendz Drums groups join the HSS for what promises to be a fantastic celebration of West Indian music, dance and culture. Whether you’re coming back from Carnival in the Caribbean, or you just want to warm up your winter, come on down to the Hall and get ready to dance the night away!!
Concha Unlimited Dance Bio
Concha Unlimited was founded by Concha Lawrence, a graduate of the Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts where she studied and majored in Dance. She is also a graduate of Syracuse University where she received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and African-American Studies. She later received a Master’s of Science in Management at the University of Saint Joseph. Concha Lawrence began dancing at the tender age of two years old and has attended the Hartford Ballet and performed numerous times in Kirk Petersen’s “American Nutcracker”. She is currently the Director of the Dance Ministry at the First Cathedral Church located in Bloomfield, Connecticut. Concha Unlimited’s goal and primary purpose is to promote self-confidence and self-empowerment by reverencing the mind, body, and spirit through a fusion of dance styles. Many different genres of dance are integrated such as the following: ballet, modern, tap, hip-hop, jazz, African, salsa, swing, and many more.
