Vienna Boys Choir

A Vienna Boys Choir performance is never just a concert for classical aficionados; it’s an enchanting event that will delight music lovers from all walks of life. Don’t miss the chance to experience this “breathtaking” choir live and take in their “totally disciplined voices tempered by a singular sense of ease and consistency” (Washington Post). Who knows, you may just hear the next Schubert or Haydn—both among the famous choir alumni.

No group of child musicians has won more renown than the incomparable Wiener Sängerknaben, (Vienna Boys Choir) founded by Emperor Maximilian I in 1498. Six centuries later, the famed Vienna Boys Choir continue to delight music-lovers across the globe with their purity of tone, distinctive charm and a diverse, crowd pleasing repertoire of timeless music with a universal popular appeal that includes Austrian folk songs and waltzes, classical masterpieces, beloved pop songs, holiday favorites and medieval chant. Gifted musicians with voices of unforgettable beauty, they carry on the illustrious tradition as the world’s preeminent boy choir.

Daniel Pearl World Music Day (View Website)

Before we begin tonight’s performance we would like to take a moment to honor a global peace initiative that began with a tragedy. Daniel Pearl was the journalist & musician who was murdered by terrorists in Pakistan in 2002. His family and friends decided to carry on his work of connecting people through music and communication by starting the Daniel Pearl Foundation. One of their programs asks musicians and promoters to add a few words to their October concerts in a united call for a hate-free world. When we come together for a concert, as we are tonight, we put aside our differences and grievances. Music is a unique bridge-builder, and “Harmony for Humanity” is the theme of Daniel Pearl World Music Days: We hope that you will take this reminder to find ways to bridge cultural differences and bring harmony to the world.  Thank you for joining us for tonight’s concert, please enjoy the show!

Artist Bio

Today there are around 100 choristers between the ages of ten and fourteen, divided into four touring choirs. The four choirs give around 300 concerts and performances each year in front of almost half a million people. Each group spends nine to eleven weeks of the school year on tour. They visit virtually all European countries, and they are frequent guests in Asia, Australia and the Americas.

Together with members of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and the men of the Vienna State Opera Chorus, the Vienna Boys’ Choir maintains the tradition of the imperial musicians: as Hofmusikkapelle (Chapel Imperial) they provide the music for the Sunday Mass in Vienna’s Imperial Chapel, as they have done since 1498. In 2012, the choir participated for the ffth time in the New Year’s Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Mariss Jansons.
