The tragedy of the fateful 1977 plane crash of the Lynyrd Skynyrd band and the loss of Ronnie Van Zant brought Jimmie Van Zant back to his musical roots.  Guided by the lessons he had learned from his beloved cousin Ronnie, Jimmie decided to continue his music career, and make his mark on the genre of Southern Rock.  Jimmie Van Zant formed his own group, was later signed by a record label, and recorded his first album, "Southern Comfort" fondly co-writing "Ronnie's Song" as a tribute to his late cousin.  This song is still demanded during Jimmie's live concerts.  In 2008 Jimmie released "My Name is Jimmie."  Currently, Jimmie and his band are working on their third album.
