Seun Kuti & Egypt 80

Seun Kuti is the youngest son of the famous Nigerian Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti. He began playing with his father's band Egypt 80 when he was nine years old and took it over upon his father's death in 1997 at the mere age of 14. Kuti finding his own idiosyncratic voice as songwriter, singer, and band leader carries forward the legacy and political ethos of his father giving a voice to Africa in the modern world.

Artist Bio

Seun Kuti is the youngest son of the famous Nigerian Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti. He began playing with his father's band Egypt 80 when he was nine years old and took it over upon his father's death in 1997 at the mere age of 14. Kuti finding his own idiosyncratic voice as songwriter, singer, and band leader carries forward the legacy and political ethos of his father giving a voice to Africa in the modern world. “Music has great impact on people’s feelings,” Kuti says. “That’s what music should be. Pop music today is all about me, me, me. Nobody is singing about we. But nothing can change if we don’t look out for our brothers and sisters.” Kuti’s latest release A Long Way To The Beginning co-produced by the Grammy-winning American jazz pianist Robert Glasper encompasses all the passion, adrenalin and searing truth of a Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 live show, proudly filling the shows his father once blazed a trail in. Fela is the stuff of legends and the energy he and the members of Egypt 80 put out on the stage was electrifying – Seun learned well from a master and he and many original members of Egypt 80 continue to light a global fire.
