Dianne Reeves is considered among the world’s pre-eminent female jazz vocalists. As a result of her breathtaking virtuosity and improvisational prowess, Ms. Reeves received a Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Performance for three consecutive recordings — a Grammy first in any vocal category. Featured in George Clooney’s Academy Award–nominated film Good Night, and Good Luck, her soundtrack recording provided Ms. Reeves with her fourth Best Jazz Vocal Grammy. Ms. Reeves has recorded with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra conducted by Daniel Barenboim, was a featured soloist with Sir Simon Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic, and has also recorded and performed extensively with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra featuring Wynton Marsalis.
Ms. Reeves was the first Creative Chair for Jazz for the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the first singer to ever perform at the famed Walt Disney Concert Hall. Ms. Reeves has performed at the White House for the State Dinner for the President of China, as well as for the Governors’ Ball. She also participated in a program entitled Sing the Truth, a musical celebration of Nina Simone that also featured Liz Wright and Angelique Kidjo. More recently she participated in American Voices, a uniquely noteworthy event curated by Renée Fleming at the Kennedy Center.
Ms. Reeves recently released Beautiful Life, her first album in five years, which features her arsenal of talents on a captivating collection of covers and originals. “Beautiful Life” features singularly memorable covers of Bob Marley’s “Waiting in Vain,” Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams,” Marvin Gaye’s “I Want You” and Ani DiFranco’s self-empowering “32 Flavors.” The rest of the twelve tracks cover a spectrum from jazz to soul, along with two new songs, “Cold” and “Satiated”, which are emotionally volcanic. Produced by Terri Lyne Carrington, Beautiful Life features an all-star cast including bassists Esperanza Spalding and Richard Bona, vocalists Gregory Porter and Lalah Hathaway, pianists Robert Glasper and Gerald Clayton and Reeves’ cousin and frequent longtime collaborator, the late great George Duke.
