Singer, songwriter, and actor Waylon Payne was born in Outlaw country: his mother was the late singer-songwriter Sammi Smith; his father was Willie Nelson’s longtime guitarist, the late Jody Payne; and his godfather and namesake is Waylon Jennings. Payne toured with Shelby Lynne before releasing his debut album in 2004. His songwriting credits include “To Learn Her” and “Use My Heart” (Miranda Lambert) and “Wild Love” (Ashley Monroe). He was nominated for the Americana Music Association’s Song of the Year honor for 2018, for “All the Trouble” (Lee Ann Womack), which he co-wrote with Womack and Adam Wright. Payne also has written songs for Ty Herndon, Cory Morrow, and Django Walker.
