Polly Hincks Bio
It takes skill and inspiration to be an artist. I have enough of both, as well as a lot of training, to make the grade, to bring happiness to myself and to those who like my work. But, I do not consider myself… “an ARTIST!”
My training: one year at the Parsons School of Design, NYC< followed much later by four years of studio courses at the Hartford Art School, University of Hartford, many of them under Paul Zimmerman.
After graduation, I did a lot of painting, mostly oils with some of them quite large. At some point during these years I developed a number of paintings of trees, some of which had hidden messages in the branches for various family birthday gifts. Another development grew out of looking into a mirror in my studio that had shattered in a fall. Those are the Broken Mirror pieces in this show. I became fascinated in the images the mirror projected, which was the start of a number of seemingly abstract paintings influenced by these views.
In time I had to develop a new way of creating images. Because an old bout with polio had slowly worn out my affected shoulder muscles, I switched to smaller pictures, drawn on mylar using prismacolor pencils. I started drawing flowers and then strangely, became interested in words! Some of the word pictures are “Cool”, “Voila”, “Ephemeral!” and “Cache” with many more to come, I hope. I’m having fun.
Giclee prints have been made of some of my work and will be available for purchase at Infinity Hall in Norfolk.
